14 DAY TRIAL // The leader of the Linux Mint project has just announced that the MATE flavor of the Linux Mint Debian Edition 2 has been released and is now available for download.
Linux Mint developers have been working on the Debian edition of their operating system for quite some time, and after several testing versions, we finally get to test and use the stable one. This is not meant to replace the current the version based on Ubuntu, and that edition will continue to live on. It's still the main focus of the development team, so nothing has changed in that regard.
On the other hand, users will most likely notice that the MATE edition based on Debian is not all that different from the Ubuntu edition, although the devs have explained that it should be a little bit faster. Some of the packages implemented in LMDE are a little bit newer, and that should affect the performance of the distro.
LMDE 2 "Betsy" MATE is fast
As you would expect, the MATE edition is fast and light. The makers of the distro have made everything in their power to keep the ISO light. The only major difference is that the Debian edition won't have any intermediary releases, but that shouldn't pose a problem to the users.
"LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) is a very exciting distribution, targeted at experienced users, which provides the same environment as Linux Mint but uses Debian as its package base, instead of Ubuntu. LMDE is less mainstream than Linux Mint, it has a much smaller user base, it is not compatible with PPAs, and it lacks a few features. That makes it a bit harder to use and harder to find help for, so it is not recommended for novice users," reads the official announcement.
