The recently introduced Linux Mint Debian edition has gotten its first update which brings the ISOs on par with the latest Linux Mint 10 release. While existing users should have already gotten the updates, the Debian edition is a rolling release with a constant stream of package and feature updates, Linux Mint Debian 201012 makes it easy for new users to start with the latest packages.

"What a better time than Christmas to bring all the best from 2010 into an updated release of Linux Mint Debian," Clement Lefebvre announced on the Linux Mint blog.

Highlights of Linux Mint Debian 201012:

· All Mint 10 features;
· Support for 64-bit systems;
· Performance boost - using cgroup, the notorious '4 lines of code better than 200' in user-space;
· Installer improvements - multiple HDDs, grub install on partitions, swap allocation, btrfs support;
· Better fonts - Using Ubuntu’s libcairo, fontconfig and Ubuntu Font Family;
· Better language support with the inclusion of the ttf-wqy-microhei, ttf-sazanami-mincho, ttf-sazanami-gothic fonts;
· Better connectivity and hardware support - pppoe, pppoeconf, gnome-ppp, pppconfig, libgl1-mesa-dri, libgl1-mesa-glx, libgl1-mesa-dev, mesa-utils installed by default;
· Better sound support - addressing conflicts between Pulse Audio and Flash;
· Updated software and packages.

The main goal for Linux Mint Debian 201012 is to bring it on par with Linux Mint 10 which was released last month. All of the new features and changes introduced in Linux Mint 10 are now available for Debian fans as well.

There is now also a 64-bit version of Linux Mint Debian. Another update is the inclusion of the Ubuntu Font Family, which was introduced with the latest Ubuntu 10.10 release.

Linux Mint Debian aims to provide an experience indistinguishable from the regular Linux Mint releases, which are based on Ubuntu, while being based on Debian Testing.

Since Ubuntu is itself based on Debian, there aren't that many technical changes, but major version software updates should come faster than once every six months and the build should be closer to a 'pure' Linux release.
