The Linux Mint team has been refreshing all of its releases for the past couple of months and has now revealed Linux Mint 9 LXDE. Based on the lightweight LXDE desktop environment, it tries to get as close as possible to the main release and includes some of the main new features of Linux Mint 9, the revamped Software Manager, the new Backup Tool and others. It’s the first release to include the LXDM as a display manager. Linux Mint 9 LXDE also features a completely rewritten PCManFM2 file manager.

Based on Lubuntu 10.04, Linux 2.6.32, Openbox 3.4.10, LXSession 0.4.3, and Xorg 1.7.5, Linux Mint 9 LXDE features a complete desktop computing experience while being easy on system resource usage thus making it suitable for older hardware and situations where speed is a crucial factor,” the team said in the official announcement.

Featured improvements in this release: LXDM, improved PCManFM2 file manager, VLC installed by default, 30,000 applications catalogued and reviewable both online and in the new software manager, brand new incremental backup tool for both data and software selection, 3 years support,” it added.

Linux Mint 9 LXDE is the first to use the LXDM display manager. In tune with the entire LXDE software stack, LXDM is a lightweight alternative to similar tools. The Linux Mint also lists great localization support and customization options as reasons for their choice.

PCManFM2 is now included, a complete rewrite of the original file manager for LXDE. It tries to stay close to the same design principles, with speed and a small memory footprint being central, but adds some more advanced features like support for mounting and unmounting filesystems, trash can support, better access to remote filesystems and others.

Linux Mint 9 LXDE also comes with the new additions to Linux Mint 9, a rewritten Software Manager with 30,000 packages included and plenty of other features, and the new Backup Manager. Linux Mint 9 got a visual refresh which was carried through to the LXDE version, as well.
