A few minutes ago, Clement Lefebvre and the hard working people behind the Linux Mint community announced the immediate availability of two new editions for the Helena release: Linux Mint 8 Fluxbox and Linux Mint 8 KDE64! While the latter contains exactly the same amount of new features like the Linux Mint 8 KDE Community Edition, but compiled especially for 64-bit processors, such as Intel Core 2 Quad, Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon X2 64, the Fluxbox edition is brand-new and it is powered by Linux 2.6.31, X.Org 7.4 and Fluxbox 1.1.1.

This release has been built with the emphasis on a lightweight and yet fully functional desktop centered on the Fluxbox window manager. Even though we strive to provide out-of-the-box readiness for all your hardware and common computing tasks, Linux Mint Fluxbox CE is easily configurable to run on lower-spec hardware with the tools needed for doing so readily available." - Clement Lefebvre said in the official announcement for Linux Mint 8 Fluxbox CE.

The Linux Mint 8 Fluxbox Community Edition offers a lightweight desktop experience for low-end computers. Therefore, it can be easily installed on a machine with about 256 MB of RAM. At the moment, only 32-bit processors are supported! Linux Mint 8 Fluxbox also includes new artwork based on Minty Leaf by mickyz.

We remind everyone that Linux Mint 8 (Helena) is based on the Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) operating system, has support for the EXT4 filesystem, and various improvements to its unique tools: Update Manager, Software Manager or Mint Menu.

What is Linux Mint? Linux Mint is an elegant, easy-to-use, up-to-date, 100% free and comfortable Linux desktop distribution based on the very popular Ubuntu operating system. It offers paid commercial support to companies and individuals. Also, free community support is available from the forums and the IRC channel.

Well technically it's not "100% free" because it includes proprietary codecs out of the box (but that's basically the only reason for using it in the first place).

In any case, I might check out the Fluxbox version just so I can have the ease of Ubuntu plus my beloved Fluxbox with all my codecs. I don't have time to futz around in the command line these days.

Thanks for the status update.
