Linux Mint 7 (codename Gloria) was released last month and it has been a resounding success. Though initially it supported only 32-bit architectures, we are now happy to announce that Clement Lefebvre released, a few minutes ago, the x64 version of Linux Mint 7.

As expected, it has the same Ubuntu 9.04 base and the same features and improvements as its sibling, but was especially built for 64-bit processor architectures, such as the Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon X2 64 ones.

Highlights of Linux Mint 7 (Gloria):

· Based on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope);
· Linux kernel 2.6.28;
· X.Org 7.4;
· GNOME 2.26.1 desktop environment;
· New artwork featuring beautiful black and green colors;
· Improved boot speed;
· mintMenu now offers suggestions as you type;
· Improved mintInstall;
· mintUpdate now displays download sizes for each available update;
· Improved mintUpload for easier setup;
· Added mintWelcome for a quick overview of the operating system;
· Added apt version, inxi and rtfm command-line tools;
· Moonlight/Silverlight support;
· The Xchat-Gnome IRC client was replaced by XChat;
· Meta and virtual packages.

Recommended system requirements:

· A 64-bit processor;
· 512 MB of RAM to install, 256 MB of RAM to run;
· 2.5 GB free hard disk space (for installation);
· VGA video card capable of at least 800x600 resolution;
· A CD-ROM drive.

What is Linux Mint? Linux Mint is an elegant, easy-to-use, up-to-date, 100% free and comfortable Linux desktop distribution based on the very popular Ubuntu operating system. It offers paid commercial support to companies and individuals. Also, free community support is available from the forums and the IRC channel.

Excellent - easy to install - fast - auto updating works great - nice clean desktop that is easily reconfigured for personal preferences - slight issues with networking !. Running on AMD 64 X2 cpu - Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5 motherboard - 2gb ram - Nvidia 7950GT graphics card. Used various Linux systems including Suse and Fedora however for a non geek end user this is the best yet.

I tried a dual boot with Mint 64 bit and Ubuntu 32 bit. My system has an Intel Atom 330 dual core 1.6ghz processor, 2gb of RAM and GMA 950 graphics. No problems installing either OS. All the hardware was compatible. Mint 64 bit boots and runs slightly slower than Ubuntu 32 bit. The difference is noticeble in the graphics. Also my motherboard only supports 2gb RAM. I see no benefit using Mint 64 bit over Ubuntu 32 bit, at least on my system anyway.

By the way, both Mint 64 bit and Ubuntu 32 bit boot and run faster than Windows 7 on the same hardware. I considered trying Windows 7 64 bit on this system, but after this test I'll stick with 32 bit operating systems for now.
