Clement Lefebvre and the community behind the Linux Mint project proudly announced last night on their official blog the immediate availability of the final release of the Linux Mint 7 (codename Gloria) operating system. Linux Mint 7 is based on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) and it is powered by Linux kernel 2.6.28, X.org 7.4 and GNOME 2.26.1. Above all that, the 7th release of Linux Mint includes a brand new artwork, updated applications and many, many new breathtaking features.

"The 7th release of Linux Mint comes with numerous bug fixes and a lot of improvements. In particular the menu system, the application manager and the upload manager now provide new features such as “Suggestions”, “Featured applications”, “SCP and SFTP support”. The underlying base of the operating system was also strengthened with a new adjustment mechanism which makes Linux Mint more robust and less vulnerable to Ubuntu package upgrades, and the introduction of virtual and meta packages which simplify upgrade paths and the installation of multiple desktop environments." - said Clement Lefebvre in the official release announcement.

This release of Mint is, BEST OF BEST's...

So simply, quickly, very very fast (faster 3x then ubuntu), all codecks works (even mkv and ts - hd formats) Very cool "all in 1" system.

Thnak Mint devel. for this great distribution, my favorite!!!

So much work for such little payoff. Show us something revolutionary, not yet another skinned Linux distro.

Did you not notice that unlike ubuntu it has ALL THE FREAKING codecs installed and ready to use? You can waste hours installing codecs in Ubuntu or just install this in 20 mins!!!!!!!

@agadak

Takes 3 minutes total to get all the same codecs installed in Ubuntu that you get in Linux Mint.

I use Ubuntu, I'd know.

You can talk up Linux Mint all you like. It's a great distro built off a great distro. Don't spread FUD or you get called on it.

Yes, but does it run World of Warcraft?

Comment #4 by: mnd on 29 May 2009, 15:07 GMT reply to this comment

Yes, it does. 2 options - via virtualization (hassle in my mind), or wine (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=1922)

quote
# It comes with no codecs, no support for restricted formats and no proprietary components.
# It features an extra item in the Sound & Video menu which launches the installation of all missing codecs via a built-in .mint file

from the release notes.

The main edition has all the codecs and support for the restricted formats, not the universal

This Distribution is FANTASTIC! I replaced Ubuntu on my Dell Mini 9 with it(dual booting with OS X) and I have no regrets. Linux Mint works really nice and it's just great to have pretty much all functionality you need right out of the box. I used Mint 6 as well a while ago and this distribution is going in the right direction IMO(for People unfamiliar with Linux). If Ubuntu Tweak had an operating system LINUX MINT would be it. Most if not all Tweaks you'd normally install/add after installing Ubuntu are already there when you start up the OS for the first time and the remaining apps that you want can be installed via "MINTINSTALL".

I tried a lot of Linux distros but this is really the closest windows-user-friendly distribution i ever saw. Everything works right of the box. Every freaking videos-music-movies etc. works immediately. I spent a few days tweaking it to my taste and guess what, no terminal needed !!! After installing the video driver suggested (do that right away) you're in for a royal treat with all the visual goodies provided which put to shame even on Windows 7. I'm keeping it for real day to day usage. Apart for games, It perfectly able to replace Windows. IT"S FREE TOO!
Bravo to the fantistics developers of Mint !!!! Watch out Microsoft.

This is by far one of the best linux distros, my wifi dongle worked out of the box with this (didn't with ubuntu). If you dont want the hassle of installing codecs and ndiswrapper this is the best distro for you.

I was one of those who thought Ubuntu based? That means it sucks...
And i also thought that there wasn't any Linux user-friendly, and smart (like things make sense)
Until i tried Mint...
This IS the Linux as it should be. I don't like ubuntu A BIT, but Mint is from another league, see the aspect? The functionality is accordingly! Simply the best Linux distro, PERIOD.

There is no graphical way to add repository keys, making installation a CLI nightmare. It really angers me that no reviewer has mentioned this, and this is somehow cited as the most intuitive desktop Linux. Overrated and hyped to the extreme, this offers utilities that no one even needs (non-extensible software that only works on a distro-specific central repository, useless additions to software updates, and plenty of other useless bloat). I can't believe that the high-point of Linux is a highly superficial nanny OS.
