Clement Lefebvre has officially announced that the final version for Linux Mint 17 “Qiana” Cinnamon has been released and is now available for download.

The ISO images for Linux Mint 17 “Qiana” have been released yesterday and now the announcement for the new version has landed with more details about the operating system.

The Cinnamon flavor is the first one to arrive, as usual, and is packed with a huge number of new features, various changes, and fixes. It’s possible that users won’t notice some of the differences right from the get-go, but this where the release notes will shed some light.

“Linux Mint 17 is a long term support release which will be supported until 2019. It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop even more comfortable to use,” reads the official announcement.

As you might have heard already, Linux Mint 17 is now based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and all future version of this distribution will do the same, including the intermediary releases of Mint. It’s also means that Linux Mint OSes will share the same support period as Ubuntu, which is five years.

One of the aspects of Linux Mint 17 “Qiana” Cinnamon that received the most attention was the update manager. The developers made numerous changes and users should find it much easier to use.

“It shows more information, it looks better, it feels faster, and it gets less in your way. It no longer needs to reload itself in root mode when you click on it. It no longer checks for an Internet connection or waits for the network manager and it no longer locks the APT cache at session startup. The UI was improved, the icons were modified a bit and the changelog retrieval is now much faster and more reliable,” also said the developers.

The Cinnamon desktop was updated to version 2.2 and it includes quite a few improvements. For example, the graphical interface for System Settings has been refined and the settings now look more consistent, the switch between normal and advanced modes has been removed, Hot Corners now feature better settings, the menu applet now has a couple of new options, MPRIS support has been added, HiDPI/Retina display support has been implemented, and the window manager has been improved tremendously.
