Clement Lefebvre, the leader of the Linux Mint project, has just published the details about the newly released Linux Mint 17.1 "Rebecca" Cinnamon and MATE flavors, although the images have been available since yesterday.

The stable images for Linux Mint 17.1 "Rebecca" were released yesterday, but the details about the new versions now have been made available on the official website. Users who have been watching the announcements in the past few months will notice that there are no major differences from the RCs that arrived a little over 2 weeks ago.

The fans won't be disappointed by the new release, which can be considered the best one so far, at least for the Cinnamon version. The MATE edition is not bad either, but the Cinnamon flavor is actually a major progress and we don't even have to compare it with the 16.x branch. So many new features have been implemented that it's difficult to even list them all, although some of them do apply to both flavors.

Linux Mint 17.1 "Rebecca" is a big leap forward

The 17.x branch of Linux Mint was built on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and the Mint devs decided to only use LTS versions from now on. This means that all updates for this operating system, until 2016 when Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will be out, will be using that particular base. This also makes Linux Mint 17.x an LTS version and it will be supported until 2019, just like its Ubuntu base.

Some of the features that are present in both the Cinnamon and MATE flavors, which we already detailed in greater detail yesterday, include a much better Update manager that provides more concise information to the users, a new kernel selection menu that will allow users to be more informed before performing a kernel upgrade, improved Language settings, a refined Software manager, and a ton of smaller fixes.

There are also a number of smaller issues, the most interesting affecting some users with certain NVIDIA GPUs. The devs have detailed a possible workaround.

"If you are unable to boot Linux Mint with an NVIDIA card, or if you are experiencing constant freezes and system lock ups, please append 'nomodeset' to your boot arguments. At the boot menu of the live DVD/USB, press Tab to edit the boot arguments and add 'nomodeset' at the end of the line. If you're still having issues, you can also remove "quiet splash --" from that same line," reads the official announcement.

As usual, you can download Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon and Linux Mint 17.1 MATE from Softpedia.
