We take a closer look at the MATE version of the latest Linux Mint 16

The Linux Mint 16 MATE distribution has been officially announced and now it’s time to take a closer look at this latest version.

The MATE version of Linux Mint 16 (dubbed Petra) was launched alongside the Cinnamon version, and it incorporates a large number of changes and improvements.

Highlights of Linux Mint 16 MATE:

• The MDM 1.4 login screen has been designed to work perfectly with Linux Mint 16; • A new tool has been developed to easily format USB sticks to NTFS, FAT32 and ext4; • The boot and login sequence no longer scan your system for btrfs partitions; • The Software Manager has received a lot of bug fixes and performance improvements; • Better EFI support has been implemented. • The distribution is based on Linux kernel 3.11.
