The LXDE flavor of Linux Mint 10 has been released. Based on the already quite popular Linux Mint 10, the latest addition caters to fans wanting a light desktop built on top of Ubuntu with the usual Mint magic sprinkled.

Linux Mint 10 'Julia' LXDE comes with many of the improvements from the regular release along with OpenBox and the standard packages that usually ship with LXDE.

"Linux Mint 10 LXDE comes with updated software and brings refinements and new features to make your desktop even more comfortable to use," the official announcement reads.

Among the improvements to trickle down is the new Software Manager which, as the name implies, enables users to manage the packages they have installed on their computers as well as get new ones from the repositories.

"The Software Manager gives you a nicer browsing experience, with a better categorization of software and the use of application icons," explains Linux Mint.

There is also an upgraded Update Manager which now enables users to ignore certain packages. If you want to keep a specific version of a package you can instruct the update manager to stop notifying you of new versions.

Some of the features from the GNOME version of Linux Mint 10 are gone, for example the brand-new menu introduced in this latest version.

Several packages have been replaced by lighter-weight alternatives as well, Leafpad is the default text editor, Exaile replaces Rythmbox and ePDFViewer replaces Evince.

Linux Mint 10 LXDE works on basically any x86 processor and only requires 256 MB of RAM memory. Since it's built on top of Ubuntu which is itself based on Debian, you get access to tens of thousands of packages to satisfy every need.
