Linux Lite, a distribution created to show people just how easy it is for non-technical folks to use a Linux distribution, has advanced to version 2.2 Beta 1 and is now ready for download and testing.

Just like the 2.0 release of this operating system, the base is still Ubuntu 14.04, but the devs have made many improvements. In fact, all Linux Lite versions are only using LTS releases, which means that they show up occasionally. It also means that all releases made for this distro are actually very stable, even if the OS it's still in the Beta stages.

By basing the operating system on Ubuntu LTS, the developers also ensure that users benefit from the same kind of support, which should run until 2019. This is especially useful when you have a system that needs to run out of the box. Developers need to focus more on updates and less on security, a part that's been taken care of by Canonical and its team.

Linux Lite 2.2 Beta 1 is full of interesting stuff

The developers have listened to the community and improved greatly upon the previous 2.0 release. A ton of things have been fixed or changed, so the final version should provide a good reason for users to upgrade as soon as possible.

"This release is the culmination of ideas and suggestions from the community that improve upon Linux Lite 2.0. We've added Backups a very simple to use backup utility, Date & Time, File Search and our newest members to the Linux Lite software family, Lite Cleaner - an easy to use point and click system cleaner and Lite Welcome - greets you on first boot, gives useful information about Linux Lite including Updates, Support and Development."

"There are also improvements to Install Additional Software, allowing you to choose multiple programs at once to install. There is also 'Check Install Media' that has been added to the Live boot menu and finally, we've added some community created Linux Lite themed wallpapers," reads the official announcement.

For more information about the distribution, check out the official announcement. You can download Linux Lite 2.2 Beta 1 right now from Softpedia. This is a Live CD and it works great, either from a USB stick or in VirtualBox.

Linux Lite is a very light OS that runs very well even on low-end machines. It's a good alternative for people who are looking to replace their Windows system because it uses the same desktop paradigm, so it's not all that different.
