Linux Lite, a distribution created to show people how easy it is to use a Linux operating system, is now at version 2.0 and is available for download.

Linux Lite is a distribution based on Ubuntu LTS releases, which means that new versions of it only show up every couple of years. Its developers didn’t hurry with the new Linux Lite right after the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS launch back in April; instead,they took their time and made quite a few improvements.

“This build is the work of 4 months of constant development and the implementation of the best ideas from the team and the wider community. This also marks the beginning of our own repositories for our custom software so that changes and improvements to the operating system can be offered regularly. Now Lite User Manager, Lite Manual, Lite Software ( Install Additional Software and Remove Additional Software) and Lite Fix can evolve more easily to meet the needs of the user.”

“In this release we wanted to combine the newest versions of well-established and supported software like LibreOffice, VLC, Wine and GIMP so that people have access to the latest features in those programs. In Linux Lite 2.0 you get the carefully crafted combination of current software in certain programs on top of a stable operating system. We think this is the happy medium people are looking for between long term supports whilst also having ‘the newest stuff’,” said the developer.

Linux Lite 2.0 also features some very interesting new features. For example, users now have access to Linux Lite repositories and don’t have to rely only on the ones provided by Ubuntu, the Whisker Menu is now the default Menu and it’s complete with left side categories, the sound control from the tray has been improved, hot-swapping of USB sound devices has been implemented, and a startup sound has been added.

Also, terminal windows now have descriptive title bars, the Additional Software option has been redesigned, a new system font called Droid Sans has been added, tabs are now provided in the file manager, new dialog boxes for enabling/disabling login have been implemented, the Linux kernel has been updated to version 3.13.0-24, LibreOffice has been updated to version 4.2.4.2, and much more

Also, as a side note, the developers have explained that, in order to make the distribution fit onto a single CD, they had to cut the icon cache. This can be fixed easily with a single command:

sudo su gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Faenza/ && gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/gnome/ && gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Humanity && gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Humanity-Dark/ Enjoy!
