A Linux kernel security vulnerability was discovered in the Linux kernel for OMAP4 packages, affecting the Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) operating system.

Vasiliy Kulikov discovered CVE-2011-2494, a Linux kernel vulnerability that allows a local attacker to read various information on the system, leading to loss of privacy, because taskstats didn't enforce access restrictions.

This security flaw can be fixed if you upgrade your system to the linux-image-3.0.0-1206-omap4 (3.0.0-1206.12) kernel package. Don't forget to reboot your computer after the upgrade!

ATTENTION: Due to an unavoidable ABI change, the kernel packages have a new version number, which will force you to reinstall and recompile all third-party kernel modules you might have installed. Moreover, if you use the linux-restricted-modules package, you have to update it as well to get modules which work with the new Linux kernel version.

How do you do that? I'm new to Ubuntu so I'm not sure how to do that.

Simply run update-manager and accept the latest kernel.

Erm, looking at the CVE link in the article, this bug wasn't limited to OMAP4. Looks like it was in all kernels (as most CVE's are).

Don't panic. CVE-2011-2494 talks about a LOCAL attacker. If you are using ubuntu for your desktop IMHO you only have to fear attacks from users who can use your PC. In a lot of cases this will be the owner and probably some family menbers.
