On May 11, Greg Kroah-Hartman announced the immediate availability for download of Linux kernel 3.19.8, while informing users that the Linux 3.19 kernel branch reached end of life and they should move to the Linux kernel 4.0.x series as soon as possible.

In other words, Linux kernel 3.19.8 is the eight and last maintenance release of the 3.19 kernel series, which is currently used in a wide range of GNU/Linux operating systems, including the recently announced Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet).

"This is the LAST 3.19.x kernel release, this series is now end of life. Please move to 4.0.x at this point in time," says Greg Kroah-Hartman in the mailinglist announcement for Linux kernel 3.19.8. "I'm announcing the release of the 3.19.8 kernel. All users of the 3.19 kernel series must upgrade."

Here's what's new in Linux kernel 3.19.8

According to the attached diff, Linux kernel 3.19.8 is a very small release that fixes a 64-bit divide in the Berkeley Packet Filter, addresses an issue with the tx ring affinity_mask creation in the Mellanox mlx4 Ethernet driver, and repairs the determine_rate prototype in the CLK at91 USB driver.

Moreover, the missing sk_nulls_node_init() function in ping_unhash() has been added for the IPv4 network protocol, a MC1 memory offset calculation was repaired in the Chelsio cxgb4 Ethernet driver, and ipv4_mtu is now used in the IPv4 network protocol instead of raw rt_pmtu.

Last but not least, the NAPI (Rx polling mode) can now be scheduled in the Mellanox mlx4 Ethernet driver when RX buffers allocation fails. Download Linux kernel 3.19.8 right now via Softpedia or directly from the kernel.org website. However, we always recommend that you wait for your OS vendor to update the kernel packages.
