Greg Kroah-Hartman had the pleasure of announcing earlier today, March 7, the immediate availability for download of the first point release for the Linux 3.19 kernel, which is the current stable branch of the Linux kernel, the core of any GNU/Linux operating system.

According to the changelog, Linux kernel 3.19.1 brings a number of improvements to various architectures, including ARM, x86, PowerPC, MIPS, ARM64, as well as s390. It also includes numerous updated drivers, file system improvements, networking fixes, sound enhancements, and security patches.

“I'm announcing the release of the 3.19.1 kernel. All users of the 3.19 kernel series must upgrade. The updated 3.19.y git tree can be browsed at http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary” said Greg Kroah-Hartman in the mailinglist announcement.

The EXT4 and Btrfs filesystems received various enhancements

Linux kernel 3.19.1 brings updated drivers for wireless, USB, ACPI, Bluetooth (ath3k), CPUFreq, HID, MD/RAID, MMC, DVB, PCI, SCSI, TTY, and XEN. Additionally, the XFS, UDF, NFS, JFFS2, OCFS2, EXT4, and Btrfs filesystems received various enhancements. Several core components have also been updated, and some Ceph, IPv4, and SunRPC issues have been fixed.

Greg Kroah-Hartman also announced today the immediate availability for download of the Linux kernel 3.14.35 LTS, Linux kernel 3.10.71 LTS, and Linux kernel 3.18.9, which is currently used in numerous distributions. You can download Linux kernel 3.19.1, as well as all the aforementioned kernels via Softpedia or directly from the kernel.org website.

Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) will be based on the Linux 3.19 kernel

While the forthcoming Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) computer operating system already includes kernel packages based on the upstream Linux kernel 3.19.1, only a few stable distributions have adopted the Linux 3.19 kernel branch. Arch Linux is still using an old version from the Linux 3.18 kernel branch.

In related news, the upcoming Linux kernel 4.0 branch is currently in development with a third Release Candidate (RC) version coming (most probably) at the beginning of the week, so make sure you watch this space regularly or follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Google+ for the latest announcements.
