Today, Chris Wright announced the release of the next version of the stable 2.6 kernel branch - 2.6.15.3 .

Differences between 2.6.15.3 and its precursor are small. The patch contains mostly just code touch-ups and an important security fix (CVE-2006-0405) for a potential remote DoS exploit. No other
details were found available.

The new kernel is available from kernel.org and mirrors will follow shortly.

In the past months, there has been a flurry of linux kernel bugs found and fixed. Why is this ? Well, the important step here is to concentrate on the 'fixed' part. Bug-free applications don't exist. Although most helloworld implementations get pretty close, linux-2.6.11.11 for example contains 15448 .c and .h (C source code) files. It's a huge project, contributed to by hundreds of developers.

A second part to the explanation concerns automated checkers, such as coverity and sparse, which found problems in the open-source kernel. Because the code is freely available, those bugs are found, but they are also immediately fixed. This is still not possible with proprietary software: people have been finding bugs in Windows XP which have been there since 3.1 .
