The commercial Linux distribution comes with improved and unique features

Linspire Inc. released today a new version for their commercial desktop Linux operating system. Linspire 6.0 is based on Ubuntu 7.04, but comes with some new elements different from those on Ubuntu.

Linspire 6.0 has licensed proprietary drivers, codecs and applications in its core distribution, to provide a better user experience. After two years, this new version keeps the original philosophy of its developing company, focused on ease of use and bundles proprietary software in the places left empty by open source applications. The user has an operating system equipped with improved hardware, file type and multimedia support, such as MP3, Real, Java, Flash, Nvidia proprietary drivers etc. It also incorporates some technologies from Microsoft like Windows Media, True Type Fonts, Open XML translators that let OpenOffice edit Microsoft Word .docx formatted documents.

Linspire 6.0 has software from six extended categories, that add more power to it:

■ CNR Client (beta) - lets the user to access thousands of open source applications, and also commercial software like Win4Lin, TransGaming's Cedega etc. ■ KDE is used, so anyone who has not used Linux before will feel at home. ■ Enhanced applications and features ■ Proprietary software like Java, Flash, or Adobe Acrobat, is added when necessary for providing increased interoperability and enhanced user experience. ■ Proprietary drivers are added to expand hardware compatibility and provide the best 3D graphic card, WiFi support and more. ■ Proprietary codecs

This version will be the first commercial offering from Linspire that will provide customers with Microsoft patent agreements.
