LinkedIn has announced a major milestone, it now has 100 million registered users. The eight year old professional social network has been adding new users at a steady rate and says it is growing faster than ever now. The company is looking to go public later this year, though its financial aspects are not as great as that of other social networks. They're better than Twitter's though.

"Today, LinkedIn reached a major milestone: 100 million professionals worldwide," Jeff Weiner, LinkedIn's CEO, announced.

"We’re now growing at roughly one million new LinkedIn members every week, the equivalent of a professional joining the site at faster than one member per second," he added.

Still, it took LinkedIn eight years to reach this point. It's one of the biggest social networks in the world, but it still has plenty of growing to do, even in its more limited market of social networking for professionals.

And it now has 100 million registered users, which is not the same as 100 million active users. In fact, it gets just over 70 million monthly visitors at this point. But it is growing, at its current rate, it will get another 50 million registered users by the end of the year.

It is growing internationally as well, in fact it's now bigger in other markets than it is in the US, which accounts for only 44 percent of users. Brazil saw the biggest growth rate last year, 428 percent, followed by Mexico and India.

"Our site is currently used in over 200 countries and territories around the world, with more than half of our users coming from outside of the U.S. You can now connect just as readily with someone in Sao Paulo or Singapore as you can with your colleagues in San Francisco, London or New York," Weiner explained.
