Caliber is the new messaging service for LinkedIn users

Since there are so many private messaging apps out there, it makes you wonder why such a big networking service such as LinkedIn does not have one.

Sure, it has InMail, its own service which allows sending emails to the almost 300 million users, but a messaging app could be quite handy, not to mention much faster.

This is probably what Caliber had in mind when it designed an app that allows LinkedIn users to chat with one another. The weird thing is that Caliber has no connection whatsoever with LinkedIn.

Will LinkedIn team up with Caliber?

Since LinkedIn has announced some changes to their developer program on their official blog, stating that they would be limiting the open APIs and that they “will require developers to become a member of one of our partnership programs”, then the app might soon disappear from the platform.

When asked if they would consider a future partnership with Caliber, a LinkedIn representative declared for Recode: “We recently made some changes to our developer program and are reviewing the app’s usage against the new platform guidelines.”

It is pretty obvious from their reply that the are very slight chances for them to close a deal with the messaging service. On the contrary, there is even a possibility that they changed the developer program precisely to avoid any such situations.

What is more, the app acts as a competitor. It might make things easier for many users, but it is in fact competing with their current messaging service, which is InMail.

However, people were thrilled at the idea of having the opportunity to chat to other LinkedIn users, so maybe the company will take into consideration coming up with an app of its own, which would allow users to send instant messages among themselves, rather than write a lengthy email.

On the other hand, if LinkedIn comes up with its own messaging up, it makes you wonder whether Calibre will survive on itself, outside the successful business network.
