Some folks are willing to go to extremes to be the first to grab Apple’s latest and greatest smartphones

The new iPhone is out and everyone wants one. So, following the well-set tradition, eager customers wanting to be among the first to get their hands on the new handset are waiting in line for the Flagship Apple Store to open its gates.

And the line is long, exceedingly long. Business Insider descended at the location and found that the line stretched 12 blocks, from the 59th to the 5th and 71st and 5th.

On the 71st street, folks were camped out. Some were in the midst of more normal street activities (if they can be called that) like sitting in beach chairs, enjoying a game of cards. But others had made a fort out of some boxes and were sleeping in them like homeless folk.

Overnight, things weren’t that dandy and temperatures dropped quite a lot, so people had to resort to blankets and coats to keep warm. The beach chairs disappeared form the picture, too.

Now, as we get closer to the Apple Store, things seem to be more organized and humane; folks waiting here are most likely to go home first after the Apple store opens its doors. The police is present in big numbers, and so is the press. Let the iPhone 6 party begin!
