Lindsay Lohan can’t catch a break! Just as she seemed to have gotten her personal life (and demons) in check, and she was about to get her career back on track as well, thanks to a successful stint on stage in London, she will be sidelined for months by an infection with a rare and incurable virus.

Some hours ago, she was rushed to the hospital complaining of severe joint pain, fatigue and was running a high fever, and she was diagnosed with Chikungunya, TMZ reports.

Lindsay’s condition is stable, but recovery will be slow

The celebrity publication says that the actress, who spent most of the final days of the previous year in Bora Bora, most likely contracted the infection through a mosquito bite there. After New Year’s, she flew to Los Angeles to shoot a car insurance commercial that will presumably run during the upcoming Super Bowl.

By that time, she was already feeling poorly, but she was still ok enough to work and travel, so she didn’t see a doctor about it. She arrived in her home away from home, London, some days ago, and her health took a serious turn for the worse.

Apparently, she got so ill that “she couldn’t talk,” so she was rushed to the prestigious King Edward VII’s Hospital, where doctors ran tests and determined that she had caught the rare and incurable virus.

As of the time of writing, Lindsay has been released from the hospital because her fever broke, but she is still said to be in considerable pain. Perhaps worst of all, she’s looking at many months of the same.

Derailed comeback

This, of course, begs the question of what will happen to her comeback attempt. It’s been years that she’s been trying to rid herself of her tabloid persona, to prove that she can be serious and professional about a working commitment, and so far, all her efforts were sabotaged by her actions.

By moving to London and starring in a play there, Lindsay managed to accomplish that which Oprah Winfrey failed to do for her with the OWN reality show / docuseries: she escaped the spotlight briefly and showed that the acting chops that had made her a child star were still there and she could use them to create believable characters.

Of course, that’s not to say that her performance in the play was breathtaking or that she was a roaring success. But she wasn’t a complete disaster either. For the first time in many, many years, Lindsay had an acting job to do and she did it in a very decent fashion.

This is her final and best shot at a comeback, and she planned to use it to land new gigs and slowly make her comeback in the industry. If she’s sidelined for months by this disease, there’s no telling if she’ll get another chance, since she’s already the undisputed queen of second chances.
