Microsoft has confirmed that Limbo, the highly popular and lauded indie platformer, will be coming to the Xbox One computer entertainment system soon.

In addition to this, Redmond has also disclosed that early adopters of the Xbox One will be able to download the game for free, when the title is released.

The info comes from an announcement Microsoft delivered on the console’s dashboard, giving early adopters the good news, but failing to mention anything regarding a potential release window for the atmospheric indie platformer.

For the time being, there are no additional details on the Xbox One version of Limbo, such as whether we’ll see a pound-for-pound translation of the Xbox 360 version of the title, or whether the game will get any new content or bumped-up visuals or anything else of that nature.

One of the great early indies

Limbo is a very atmospheric platformer, developed by Playdead, presenting the story of a small boy trying to find his sister in a grim, oneiric world. The player has to guide the boy through various dangerous environments, solving numerous physics-based puzzles.

The game’s unique presentation, consisting of using solely black and white tones, with a grainy, old movie filter superimposed, together with the overall dark tone and mood, makes the indie creation a veritable work of art.

The unnamed character will experience all manner of gruesome ends, as the game is purposefully designed to make player fail before identifying the correct solution to certain puzzles.

Nonetheless, the expressiveness and unique atmosphere of the title secured it numerous awards, and the game found great commercial success, being the third most selling video game on Xbox Live Arcade in 2010.

A treat for Xbox One owners

The strong horror vibe and the overall minimalistic vibe enforced the notion that games can be perceived as art, a pretty heated debate back then, in 2010. Limbo was, at the time, released as an Xbox Live exclusive, only available on the Xbox 360, but since then it has made its way to PC, Mac and Linux, as well as to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita consoles.

Now, Xbox One owners who missed the chance to enjoy Limbo in its heyday will get the opportunity to do so sometime in the near future.

The atmospheric monochrome approach, complete with a lot of lighting play and experimental focusing techniques, is on its own enough to make trying out the game a worthwhile experience.
