For the first time since losing an unborn baby at 6 months, getting married and announcing a new pregnancy, Lily Allen is speaking up about her new, quiet life with Sam Cooper, the man she now calls her husband – and to whom she refers as to the one who saved her from herself.

The British singer has always been very open about her experience in the US and how she went there believing she would be on top of the world, only to come home heartbroken and disappointed.

Talking to Elle magazine for the latest issue, Lily is now offering a bit more insight into what we perceive as the glitzy world of showbiz and which, according to her, is built on addiction and abnormality.

“I hang out with models, the biggest pop stars and, you know, really and honestly, I hate saying this, but none of them are achieving those body shapes by being healthy,” Allen says (quotes via the Daily Mail).

“They’re not just going to the gym two hours a day. They’re not eating or they’re taking speed not to eat. In America everyone abuses that Adderall stuff and people aren’t normal,” the singer adds.

It’s because she got sucked into this world that she too started drinking and stopped eating, which made her incredibly thin. Allen, who has always been criticized in the media for her yo-yo-ing weight, believed she would be more easily accepted if she did what everybody else was doing around her.

“I wasn’t eating then, you know, [I was] going out at night. I guess when you’re not eating you have to distract yourself with other things,” she says.

“Come three o’clock it was like, ‘Oh I suppose it’s acceptable to have a glass of wine.’ And then by four o’clock I would have had four glasses. It’s not the way to be,” Allen explains.

It was then that she met Sam and realized this was not the life she wanted for herself, that she was destroying herself.

Sam was honest with her from the start and told her that, if she wanted the relationship to work, she needed to extract herself from this world: consequently, she went back to the UK, later retired from the spotlight and is now going into the (relatively a bit more drama-free) world of fashion.

Lily and Sam were married in June this year.
