It was meant as a tribute, not as an offense, singer says in new interview

Lily Allen has a notoriously foul mouth and distinctive inability to censor herself when speaking of her fellow artists or the state of the current pop music culture. However, she didn’t name her upcoming album “Sheezus” because she’s dissing rapper Kanye West, she says in a new interview.

Kanye’s latest studio album is called “Yeezus,” a not too subtle pun on the name of Jesus and his nickname ‘Ye, which is actually short for Kanye. Kanye has long said he’s a God in more ways than one, musically, artistically, personally, so his choice for an album title, while amusing, didn’t really upset as many people as you’d imagine.

Lily, on the other hand, is afraid her choice of a title for her own album might upset the one person she never meant to offend. The British pop star is now in Australia promoting it, the Daily Mail says.

“I’m terrified...,” she says when asked if she lives in fear of receiving an angry phone call from the rapper. “I thought he’d think it was a diss, but it’s totally not a diss, I love Kanye I think he’s brilliant.”

So, just like she said when she made the album title official, “Sheezus” is actually a nod, a tribute, if you will, to the rapper. Lily personally finds him very refreshing for always speaking his mind and never stopping to bother if he might offend someone with the things he says.

“He speaks his mind, whether what he’s saying is ridiculous or not, he honestly does believe it and I think there’s a lot to be said for that. In this day and age people are so bland and beige and ‘uhuh, yeah, I love everyone and everything and I like, totally don’t have a problem with everything,’ but he does have a problem!” Allen says.

Kanye might not find it offensive that Lily named her album “Sheezus,” because, as she puts it, he really can’t be bothered with most things people in the industry pay attention to. Chances are he doesn’t even know who she is but, if he ever finds out, he might think of suing her for stealing his idea with the name. Or set to trashing her in the media.

This is what Lily should worry about, especially since Kanye is very protective of his ideas.

Meanwhile, the Brit has promised that “Sheezus” will be outrageous in sound and lyrical approach. A release date is set for 2014, so keep an eye out for it in music stores.
