Rapper singer Lil' Kim was sentenced yesterday to one year and a day in jail for lying to a federal grand jury about a 2001 shootout outside a Manhattan radio station. The judge showed her some clemency after Jim declared she's a "God-fearing person". Lil' Kim has to report to prison on September 19. She was also fined $50,000.
"I testified falsely. ... I now know it was wrong," Lil' Kim said before Lynch imposed the sentence. "I'm a God-fearing, good person."
U.S. District Judge Gerard Lynch also said he could not send a black young entertainer in prison for more then a year, considering the fact that Martha Stewart spent five months in prison and another five under house arrest, after a false statement conviction.
Lynch said he didn't like Kim at first, because she came into his courtroom and lied him into his face. "You sat right next to me there and stared in the eyes of the jurors, and you tried to charm them and you tried to fake them out," Lynch said.
But the judge also credited Lil' Kim with returning to court Wednesday and admitting she had lied all along to protect members of her entourage.
"At the time I thought it was the right thing to do, but I now know it was wrong," Lil' Kim confessed to the judge.
