Lil' Wayne (real name Dwayne Michael Carter), a rapper whose career was until now rapidly ascending, was arrested on Monday after police officers found more than one illegal substance in his hotel room.
The 23-year-old artist was absent from his place of residence, when a hotel employee entered his room to check the security system. He later told the police that he saw a 'gallon-size bag' of marijuana and some unlabeled bottles of pills, while a 'heavy odor of marijuana' could still be sensed in the room. He called the manager of the establishment, who confirmed the employee's version.
The two were still inside the room when the rapper returned and politely asked them to get out. The police arrived a few minutes later and Carter let them in willingly but he and his male companion were clearly under the influence, reports say.
The police report states that the rapper had in his room a bottle containing 60 pills of Alprazolama (used for anxiety disorders and panic attacks), another one with 59 hydrocodone pills and 'two small burnt joint of marijuana'. The only thing that was not found was the bag of marijuana that the two members of the hotel staff saw.
Carter and his friend, Derrick Lawrence (37), were taken to the police station and later on released on a bail of $11,000. This is the first brush-off with the law that the rapper has in his long career in the spotlight. Although he is not that well known yet, Lil' Wayne has five albums out, with the more recent one (2005) debuting at the number two spot in the Billboard album chart.
