South Tyrol is planning to dump Office for a much more affordable alternative

There are plenty of freeware Microsoft Office alternatives on the market, and even if the software maker is regularly improving its own tool, more users are making the switch to another productivity suite.

South Tyrol, an autonomous region in northern Italy, will do the same in the coming months, according to a report published by ZDNet.

The reason is as simple as it could be: LibreOffice provides a great feature package at a lower cost, so install it on nearly 7,000 machines should result in cost savings of up to $787,000 (€600,000).

"Even after the migration is complete, we will keep using Microsoft Office on some systems because some specialised applications need it. However, analogous to Munich, Germany, it should possible to reduce the amount of licenses to a few hundred... we should be able to save around €600,000 over the next three years," Kurt Pöhl, South Tyrol’s head of IT, said during a press statement.
