The Document Foundation today surprised the iOS customer base with the brand new release of LibreOffice Remote for Impress, an app much like Apple’s now-retired Keynote Remote.

One of the hottest office suites out there, LibreOffice has just reached version 4.2.0 (stable) and offers a range of new features and enhancements that make Mac and PC users more productive than ever.

The suite’s Impress app – similar to Apple’s Keynote or Microsoft’s PowerPoint – allows users to assemble presentation slides. But what will you use to play them in front of a crowd? Well, there’s an app for that now.

It’s called LibreOffice Impress Remote and it’s actually an official solution for your iOS device from the fine gents at The Document Foundation.

The group explains that “The app allows to use your smartphone to remotely manage the LibreOffice Impress presentation running on your laptop, by showing a miniature of the slides on the screen and allowing to navigate back and forth by sweeping right and left with your fingers. In addition, you can also visualize the presenter’s notes.”

In short, LibreOffice Impress Remote lets you interact with your slideshow presentation from your iOS device of choice. You can control slide previews, speaker notes, and more, all from the same interface (which could use more polishing).

Florian Effenberger, chairman of The Document Foundation, says, “With the announcement of LibreOffice Impress Remote for iPhone/iPad, which supplements the already available app for Android, launched in January 2013 and available on Google Play Store since then, we make another step forward to make LibreOffice users happy.”

“Today, thanks to our apps, we can potentially reach over 1 billion smartphone users worldwide with the LibreOffice brand,” added Effenberger.

LibreOffice Impress Remote is a native app that displays full screen on both iPhone and iPad. The tool is compatible with the recently announced LibreOffice 4.2 for OS X, Windows, and Linux.
