The Document Foundation has just announced that LibreOffice 4.4.3 has been released and is now available for download. It's a maintenance release with not so many improvements, but it's here and it will land in repositories soon enough.

The LibreOffice 4.4.3 development cycle didn't took a long time and after just a couple of Release Candidates, of which the last one was pretty short, we now get a new release that pushes the 4.4.x branch a little bit further. The developers are already working on the 5.0 release, which they say is going to be a major improvement.

"The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 4.4.3, the third minor release of the LibreOffice 4.4 'fresh' family, with over 80 fixes over LibreOffice 4.4.2" reads the official announcement. You can also check our initial report on LibreOffice 4.4 to see what the features added in this branch are.

"The LibreOffice community is actively working at next major release, LibreOffice 5.0, expected in late July 2015. The first bug hunting session on the beta release is scheduled from May 22 to May 24, according Also, the Call for Paper for LibreOffice Conference 2015, which will be hosted by the Danish city of Aarhus from September 23 to September 25, is open until July 15."

How to install the latest LibreOffice in Ubuntu

If you have an Ubuntu system, you will need to get the upgrade from a PPA. The version available in the official repos is an older one, so this is the only way (unless, of course, you considered compiling all the packages a solution).

You will need to open a terminal and enter the following commands (root is needed):

code
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-4
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
You can download the LibreOffice 4.4.3 source packages from Softpedia if you want to compile them yourself, but please keep in mind that it's a complex app and you really need to know what you are doing.
