This is just a maintenance update for the 4.4.x branch

The Document Foundation has just revealed that LibreOffice 4.4.2 has finally reached a stable status and is now available for download. This is a maintenance update that brings a host of fixes and other improvements.

The LibreOffice 4.4.2 development cycle has been rather short and with just two Release Candidates. The last RC had just a couple of lines of changes and the makers of the office suite didn't have too many improvements to make.

The Document Foundation marches forward with this kind of smaller update while dealing with much bigger upgrades that are already in the work. The 4.4.X branch for LibreOffice is a big one and it was deemed as the most beautiful release ever due to the large amount of facelift upgrade that have been pushed to the stable branch.

Just a maintenance update, but a good reason to upgrade

Even if you're not experiencing any major problems with your current LibreOffice installation, you might still want to upgrade as soon as possible. Some of you are running distros that will soon have this latest version available, but others will have to wait or use third-party repositories.

"The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 4.4.2, the second minor release of the LibreOffice 4.4 'fresh' family, with over 50 fixes over LibreOffice 4.4.0 and 4.4.1," is noted in the official announcement. How to install latest LibreOffice in Ubuntu

If you have an Ubuntu system, you will need to get the upgrade from a PPA. The version available in the official repos is an older one, so this is the only way (unless, of course, you considered compiling all the packages a solution).

You will need to open a terminal and enter the following commands (root is needed):

code
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-4
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
You can download the LibreOffice 4.4 source packages from Softpedia if you want to compile them yourself.
