The Document Foundation has announced that the final version for LibreOffice 4.2.5 has been released for all the available platforms, including Linux.

This is just a maintenance release for the 4.2.x branch, but users of this particular version should consider upgrading nonetheless. The developers have squashed numerous bugs for this release and that can be easily observed from the changelog,

LibreOffice 4.2.5 is now the most advanced build available from The Document Foundation, but the developers maintain a number of other branches as well. Users will be able to find the 4.1.6, 4.2.3, and 4.2.4 downloads on the official website.

On the other hand, if you want a newer and more advanced version of LibreOffice, you might consider waiting for the upcoming 4.3 branch, which promises to bring lots of new and exciting features.

“The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 4.2.5 ‘Fresh,’ the fifth minor release of the most feature rich version of the software, ready for enterprise deployments. For more conservative users, The Document Foundation suggests LibreOffice 4.1.6 ‘Stable’.”

“LibreOffice 4.2.5, as well as LibreOffice 4.1.6, have been developed by over 800 contributors, who have joined the project since the launch in late September 2010. This is a wonderful achievement. We have managed to attract at least three new contributors per month, for 46 months in a row, with an average of more than 200 new contributors per year,” said Thorsten Behrens, chairman of The Document Foundation.

According to the changelog, the upper margin of the multi-page floating table has been fixed, a set-all language menu has been added, accepting/rejecting changes in a selection is now allowed, the UI color panel now shows the actual color in Writer, the mapping between ATK and UNO roles has been improved, the StylesNoDefault compat setting has been enabled, and different XML attribute names are now used for Asian and complex fonts.

If you are running an Ubuntu-based operating system, you will be able to get the new version of LibreOffice as soon as it hits the PPA:

In order to install it, you will need to enter a few commands in a terminal (you must be root for this to work):

sudo apt-get purge libreoffice-core sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-2 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install libreoffice

If you have an older branch of the office suite, it will be deleted and replaced with the new version. More details about this release can be found in the announcement.
