The Document Foundation announces that the final version of LibreOffice 4.2.3 has been released and is now available for download.

The developers from The Document Foundation have finally released a new update in the latest and most advanced branch of LibreOffice, 4.2.3.

“LibreOffice 4.2.3 ‘Fresh’ is the most feature rich version of the software, and is suited for early adopters willing to leverage a larger number of innovations. For enterprise deployments and for more conservative users, The Document Foundation suggests the more mature LibreOffice 4.1.5 ‘Stable’,” reads the official announcement.

According to the changelog, nested tables anchored inside tables for DOCX have been fixed, a layout problem with automatic spacing has been corrected, a new line is no longer dropped while importing text, the printer list is now being refreshed when the print dialog launches, the application now prefers to embed image data than to embed a linked image, the docked panel borders have been fixed, the correct command to show the grid is now being used, and SVG files in are now being saved in the ODF format.

Also, HiDPI support for Linux and Windows has been implemented, a SVG header is now being used when exporting via mtf, the custom properties with empty values are now being saved, unwanted number detection when placing page field name is now avoided, a mailmerge output path fix has been implemented, saving the password in protected documents is now working correctly, and the grammar files has been updated.

It's also worth noting that The Document Foundation also implemented a fix for the dreaded Heartbleed vulnerability.

If you are running an Ubuntu-based operating system, you will be able to get the version of LibreOffice as soon as it hits the PPA. Otherwise, you will have to wait for the maintainers of the LibreOffice package to make it available in the official repositories.

In order to install it, you will need to enter a few commands in a terminal (you will need to be root in order for this to work):

sudo apt-get purge libreoffice-core sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-2 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install libreoffice

Be careful, the command above will delete your previous LibreOffice installation, but not your preferences.

The Document Foundation also provides the sources if you want to compile your own version but, as usual, we have to caution you about doing so. It has a lot of dependencies and something is usually bound to go wrong. You would be better off installing from a repository.
