Not long ago, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth seemed like the perfect couple so, when they eventually announced that their highly anticipated wedding and their extended engagement had been called off, the world was shocked. To this day, Liam still misses Miley, claims a new report.

The two started dating in 2009, after working together on the critically panned “The Last Song,” took some time off later, and eventually got back together, announcing the engagement in June 2012. According to Miley, they wanted a big fancy wedding, the kind people still talk about years later.

None of that came true.

To all those saying they were too young to get hitched already, Miley would say she had found her one true love, her soul mate and that she planned to grow old with Liam, and the other way around. You know, the kind of silly thing that we all say when we’re young and in love and naïve enough to believe in it.

Their relationship didn’t work out but, according to a new report in the New York Post, perhaps we shouldn’t count them out as a couple yet. Liam still misses Miley and has nothing but nice things to say about her.

On holiday with friends in Portofino, the handsome Aussie actor was heard telling friends that he and his ex Miley had a very “powerful connection” and would “always be best friends,” the report says.

“Liam kept raving about how amazing she was, how much they clicked and understood everything about each other,” an insider adds.

Presumably, Liam would not be opposed to getting back with Miley but whether she would ever consent to it still remains to be seen: in her most recent shows, the pop star has been dropping plenty of hints about Liam aka an ex who broke her heart and deserves only the worst in life for it.

There’s also talk that at least “Wrecking Ball” and “Last Goodbye,” both recorded for her newest album “Bangerz” (but only the former made the cut on it), were written after the painful breakup and are “dedicated” to Liam.

If that’s true, it’s probably safe to say that Liam doesn’t stand a chance of getting Miley back, not when she sings about how, “We never said that we would be perfect/ We only said that we tried/ And when you said that we were forever/ I guess that's just another lie.”

Since the split, with some minor exceptions, both Miley and Liam have been mostly single.
