Mobile manufacturers have been researching the amount of energy used for recharging their devices and have made some revolutionary discoveries. Consequently, they have created a rating system for chargers, so that users can choose to buy only the ones that are more environmentally friendly. The companies that have taken on this project are Samsung,
Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG.
The rating system is made up to include all the chargers of the earlier mentioned companies, and range from five stars to zero stars, with the latter representing the least economic charger. Moreover, the studies made by these companies show that chargers use up plenty of energy even when they are no longer charging a device, but are left plugged in.
As it turns out, not many of us are aware of this circumstance regarding the amount of energy we are so unconsciously wasting. Another relevant issue would be that, if the three billion mobile users were to switch to 4 or 5-star
chargers, per year, they would save up approximately the energy produced by two medium-size power plants. This wouldn't be such a bad idea, wouldn't you say?
Interested users can visit all these companies’ websites to learn how economic or how wasteful their charger is, and to get more details on what actions they can take to contribute to the solving of this problem. These ratings and studies are based on the European Commission’s energy standards, and are also recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency in the States. To boost your confidence even more in the studies, if such a thing is required, know that all the ratings will be kept up to date, should there be other developments related to these issues.
Trying to lower the
energy consumption level starting right now, some companies are thinking of implementing visual alerts in their new devices, which would remind the user to unplug the charger once the battery is full.
