Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have been very close ever since they worked together on James Cameron's “Titanic” many years ago. However, even before that, Leo had nothing but the deepest admiration and respect for Kate.

In a new interview with The Sun to promote the 3D re-release of the film, DiCaprio talks a bit about his personal life, his mother and what he likes in the women he dates.

He also reveals that he almost passed on the chance to work with Cameron on “Titanic.” In fact, he stresses, had it not been for Kate, he would have never accepted the part.

“Titanic? I would love to say I predicted it would be one of the biggest hits in film history. I didn’t – and wondered whether I should do it at all. I resisted it for a long time because I had been offered the film Boogie Nights,” Leo recalls.

When he found out that Kate had also been approached for the part of his love interest and had said yes, he decided he should do the same.

“The fact that Kate Winslet said 'yes' was the final decider. She was awesome,” DiCaprio says.

They made a perfect team on set, but also when the cameras were no longer shooting. They became friends and were there for one another during the most difficult moments on set.

As fans must know, Cameron has a reputation for being very strict to his stars – shooting for hours on end in cold water must have been no picnic.

“We were definitely shoulders for each other to lean on. We had to be partners on the film. All the complaining in the world was done between us two, so we did not have to vent it on anyone else. But I am so glad to be part of that movie,” Leo says.

“Years from now, people will still be watching that film. I am part of something historical, in a lot of ways. It gave me so many opportunities, as an actor, to steer the course of my own destiny,” he adds.

DiCaprio recalls that one of his “proudest moments” was when he was able to take his mom and grandmother to the London premiere of the film.
