Back at CES 2014, Lenovo had an interesting product put on display. The company is mostly known for its business and hybrid laptops, but did you know the Chinese device maker also makes gaming laptops?

Yes, Lenovo is aiming to make an impact among the Alienwares and Rezers of the world. The laptop is dubbed the Y50 and brings to the table a powerful asset: it offers 4K resolution.

Now, after it first teased the device in Las Vegas, Lenovo has finally started shipping out the laptop to customers. Toshiba is no longer the only company offering a 4K notebook, and shoppers are faced with more options.

The Y50 arrives with a 15.6-inch screen which boasts 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution, which is the highest resolution you’ll ever going to be seeing in laptops today. Most of them offer just 1366 x 768, so you can see the huge difference here.

The Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus, Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and Razer Blade gaming laptops offer something similar in this department, by shipping out with a resolution of 3200 x 1800. But the only laptop with the same standard is the Toshiba Satellite P50t, which sells for $1,499 / €1,102.

Lenovo announced the Y50 alongside the Y40 back at CES, but has until now failed to ship these devices. The only versions offered to interested buyers came equipped with HD screens.

The Y40 model is also supposed to become available with 4K, but for the time being Lenovo is not giving the green light to this particular version.

Apparently, Lenovo was dealing with some issues which prevented it from acquiring the needed 4K panels. It appears the device maker has somehow resolved the matter, at least in the case of the Y50.

Apart from the amazing display the laptop bundles a powerful CPU under the hood, in the form of an Intel Core i7-4710HQ processor. The device takes advantage of NVIDIA’s latest GeForce GTX 860M GPU with 2GB of video memory fitted with 8GB of RAM and 1TB of hard-drive storage. This configuration will sell for $1,299 / €955.

There’s also another version, which arrives with the same Core i7 CPU, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M with 4GB of video memory, 16GB of DRAM, and 512GB solid-state drive storage.

Both models also have 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI, and two USB 3.0 ports. The 4K laptop takes advantage of Windows 8 from the get-go.
