Lenovo might release a tablet that can be used as a desktop, at some point in the future

Tablet design hasn’t really changed much ever since the first models were introduced, but a Lenovo might be looking to challenge the standard way we look at tablets.

In the rich data base that is the design website red-dot 21, there’s a Lenovo multi-mode tablet that looks like it stepped out from the future.

The slate can be held in your hands or propped up on a surface like a monitor by virtue of a little design trick. The back of the tablet features an atypical back plate that can be folded in such a way as to sustain the tablet.

Lenovo hasn’t officially announced the Folder Pad, but the designers of the tablet deem it innovative enough to submit it to organizations bestowing design awards.

There’s not much information about the specs the tablet will feature or even what operating system is going to be running the show. From the pictures, we currently have the slate appears to have stereo speakers and extremely stylish and flat keyboard that’s reminiscent of the Microsoft Surface Touch Cover.

Speaking of which, the whole Folder Pad seems to be drawing design cues from Microsoft Surface, which also boasts a built-in kickstand. However, there’s a subtle difference. Microsoft’s offering users the keyboard to provide a laptop experience, while the Lenovo Folder Pad seems to be designed to be used in desktop mode.

Nevertheless, the slate looks quite beautiful and we can’t help but wonder what if Lenovo could go even further with this, allowing users to fold different parts of the black plate, offering an origami-style rear-side.

Lenovo is not at its first attempt to provide innovative designs for its tablets and tablet-related accessories. One of its most successful tablet-endeavors, the Yoga tablet came boasting a design incorporating a kickstand that allows the tablet to be used in three different modes (hold, tilt and stand).

In the accessory department, Lenovo has come up with a new concept in terms of tablet covers. The Quickshot Cover, designed for the ThinkPad 8 tablet, allows users to snap photographs faster by blending the moment when the camera is revealed with the moment when the camera app launches.

Tablet photography isn’t too popular with users, but the new Quickshot Cover might change all that, by allowing users to seize the perfect moment to snap a photo.

Anyway, earlier this week we have seen the Medion Akoya S621xT appear on the same sight, offering the option of being used as an AIO / desktop. That makes us wonder if we’re not beholding the next trend in terms of tablets, which adds desktop mode to the table.
