Lenovo wants to become a bigger player in the gaming market

MSI has been the go-to company when looking to purchase a capable gaming notebook, so its notoriety in this particular sector has attracted the attention of a certain player in the tech industry.

According to a recent report, world’s leading PC manufacturer Lenovo might be interested in acquiring MSI’s gaming notebook branch.

Over the years, Lenovo has tried its hand at producing gaming devices, but most of them have failed to impress the public. The most recent products in this category launched under the Lenovo banner are the high-end IdeaPad Y70 Touch gaming notebook that sells for $1,299 / €989 and the budget-friendly IdeaPad Z50-75.

But according to Digi Times, Lenovo is looking for ways to upgrade its gaming notebook business and acquiring MSI will certainly help pushing that goal.

MSI knows how to sell gaming notebooks

MSI’s success in the notebook business has apparently prompted companies like Acer, ASUS and Toshiba to develop their own similar products for this niche market.

The Asian report also notes that, while sales for traditional notebooks have been declining steadily, the same can’t be said about gaming devices which actually constitute the bulk of laptop shipments as of late.

MSI is already facing though competition from long-lasting market leader Alienware and new entrants in the field, like ASUS (the ROG lineup) and Acer (Predator lineup), so teaming up with the world’s largest PC manufacturer doesn't seem like a bad strategy at all.

Lenovo has long been on the path of acquiring businesses in order to strengthen its position. Just to mention a few, the Chinese device maker has purchased IBM’s global PC business, NEC’s PC business, and most recently, Motorola Mobility from Google.

A new addition to its portfolio shouldn't surprise us, although we have to admit that Lenovo reorienting its attention towards the gaming notebook niche is quite surprising.

It remains to be seen whether MSI will agree to the deal or not. The report only says that Lenovo has yet to receive an answer to its proposition, as MSI is considering the offer, while negotiating the terms of the potential deal.
