The problem has been going on for years, with no apparently fix on the horizon

The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 isn't exactly the newest notebook model on the market, but it remains a worthy laptop capable of sustaining most of your daily activities. Nevertheless, the product is not bug-free.

Back when it was launched, Lenovo targeted it at the business sector, but a lot of main stream consumers have jumped onboard the X220 bandwagon too. Nevertheless, ever since 2011 when the laptop was released, customers have been complaining of an issue related to “weird bright spots” which appear on the screen.

User Alkon has started the thread, more than three years ago.

“Yesterday I have noticed a problem with the display in my X220 (type 4290-W1B). There is a small, white spot (about 1 mm diameter), clearly visible on the screen.”

“It doesn't look like a normal bad pixel, but like a problem with the background light, or something. It is not visible when black color is displayed. The laptop was bought about 3 months ago and everything was OK until yesterday.”

The thread stretches on for numerous pages, until it reaches our current times and shows us more and more users are facing the issue. Lenovo representatives have stepped in, saying they are getting customers samples shipped in, so they can assess the problem. Even so, a fix has not been provided to this day.

More than that, some customers were forced to pay $750 / €555 to get their screens replaced, due to Lenovo saying the repair was not covered in the device warranty. But this didn’t stop the spots from coming back.

“I've got an x220. Got the spots, paid $750 for the replacement and spots came right back. The issue is the lid. It's just not constructed well. Its really a shame, because everything else about this laptop is lovely plus it was real easy to install linux.”

“I would like to upgrade to an x240, but definitely don't want to deal with screen spots. Frankly, I wouldn't bother with a replacement regardless of whether or not you are able to get Lenovo to pay for it. “

“The spots will come back, and I eventually started noticing ghosting after mine was replaced in addition to the spots. I was hurt even more to hear about x230s with the same issue,” says one user.

Going through the thread, we learn that a lot of x230 users are also experiencing the same bug, but it seems Lenovo is having a hard time coming up with a fix that doesn't involve panel replacement. Are you having any issues?
