Lenovo launched this problematic tablet a year ago

Back in 2013, Lenovo launched the ThinkPad Tablet 2. The device arrived with a 10.1-inch IPS LCD display offering 1366 x 768 pixel resolution (155ppi).

The machine bundled a dual-core Intel Atom Z2760 processor and offered the Windows 8 full experience, as opposed to the watered-down Windows RT.

Albeit being last year’s news, the tablet is still widely used and adopters are apparently quite happy with the device.

However, ever since late 2013, reports claiming that the device has trouble waking up after being in a state of prolonged sleep have made the rounds online on the official Lenovo forums. More than that, touch or digitizer do not seem to respond either.

Here’s what user sbsbls2, who started the topic, has to say:

“I like my TPT2 very much. However, my tpt2 has following problems after a prolonged sleep: 1) After pressing the power botton to wake the machine, the display would turn on for about 1 second and turn off then no response. I have to manually press the power botton for a while to turn off tpt2 and turn on again.”

“2) Touch or digitizer no response after prolonged sleep. If I was lucky to still be able to control windows somehow, then I could fix this problem by disabling/enableing the abnormal HID devices in Device Manager. But it is very annoying.”

Other users are experiencing similar problems and the topic stretches out for more than 40 pages.

“I have this problem too. After a longer time off sleep, the device can’t be powered on. It’s still running, I tried this over night…uses 80% of battery, but you can’t activate the display. I have to turn off the device, pressing 5 second the power button and turn it on again.”

A number of users have tried multiple fixes to resolve the situation, but they either work for a limited time or don’t apply to every affected owner of the tablet.

Bernardez makes a roundup of the things he has tried so far.

“-Updated to the new BIOS -Reinstall divers -Reset tablet to factory defoults. (note: this problem has occurred since I've bought the tablet) -Installed all the drivers (note: the last Z2670 CPU driver/chipset driver package, also known as "Intel IO Driver for Windows 8 (32-bit) - ThinkPad Tablet 2" is installed) -Disable the NFC device. Wakeing up after prolonged sleep still does not work. -Reinstalled the NFC drivers. Driver installation was "strange" with text in screen about the device being connected and not connected (about 10 per second. lasting ~30 seconds).”

This was all happening back in 2013, but fast forward to 2014 and users are still asking if the problem has been officially resolved.

“After having several conversations with people at Lenovo including my account manager it was very apparent that the TPT2 should never have been released and has more or less be dropped as a product.”

“I don't believe any engineering effort will be put into fixing the various issues with this device and the focus is now on the ThinkPad 8 & ThinkPad Tablet 10. My advice would be do the same as I have, sell the TPT2 or return where possible,” writes emteebee.

Lenovo representatives seem to have abandoned the problem altogether, so if you are dealing with similar issues, you could try asking Lenovo for a replacement if your warranty is still viable.
