The presumed deal with IBM has opened a whole new can of worms

Not content with dominating just the PC market, rumor has it that Lenovo is in talks with IBM for the acquisition of the latter's server business.

For all its expertise in PCs, however, Lenovo doesn't really know all it needs to know about servers and data centers.

That is why, reports say, it has begun to seek help outside its home country of China, from Taiwan-based server ODMs.

It wants to cooperate with them, like it did when it set up a joint venture with Compal back in 2011, and with EMC in 2012 (it targeted the Chinese enterprise data center sector).

IBM will probably sell just the entry-level server product line to Lenovo, since the high-end ones still make profits.

Currently, Lenovo's team of cloud engineers numbers 100, but it should grow as it looks for an IDM partner it can fund.
