Rockstar has announced new downloadable content that will be released for Red Dead Redemption, the Western-themed open world video game, keeping its promise of extending the life of the game, especially through new additions to the multiplayer elements, which was a bit barren at launch.

The first piece of new content to arrive will be the Legends and Killers Pack, which is set for the beginning of August 2010, and will focus on new multiplayer extensions, including 9 new map locations, 8 new characters from the single player, and a new weapon, the Indian made Tomahawk. There are also new Trophies and Achievements to be unlocked, for the price for 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live and 9.99 dollars on the PlayStation Network.

The Liars and Cheats DLC introduces Attack and Defend modes and challenges for multiplayer and more mounted combat. There are also more multiplayer characters that can be used in Free Roam and Liars Dice and Poker games that can be played by more than one player at the same time. There are also new Achievements and Trophies, and players who get the pack will be able to use a new Explosive Rifle. The price point is set at 9.99 dollars on the PSN and 800 Microsoft Points on the Xbox Live.

The Free Roam pack does not yet have a price or a launch date but will introduce more Free Realm challenges, defensive emplacements, leaderboards and a host of measures created to deter those who abuse the rules of the game.

The Undead Nightmare Pack will introduce a horror twist to the Western setting, with the ghost towns and cemeteries letting out a stream of zombies. The DLC will offer challenges, quests and single player content alongside more animals to be hunted in the world, more dynamic events, 8 new zombie characters that can be used in multiplayer. The price is set at 800 Microsoft Points on the Xbox 360, which is 9.99 dollars for the PlayStation 3. The launch date has not been set yet.

Sam Houser, the founder of Rockstar Games, stated when the announcement was made, “We want to continue to provide Red Dead Redemption’s fans with a steady supply of innovative new content. Our goal is to continue to pack as much entertaining gameplay and as many surprises as we can into the massive world of Red Dead Redemption over the coming months.”
