Wind Waker HD was selected because it offered a pleasant surprise

The development team at Nintendo working on The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD for the Wii U say that they also tried to bring Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess to the new device but they were not impressed with the results.

It seems that both games were fully playable on the platform but the company was focused on creating an experience that would impress gamers.

Eiji Aonuma, the producer working on the project, is quoted by the Official Nintendo Magazine as saying, “the result of that was, hmm, those are semi-realistic representations of the Zelda world so we weren’t really surprised with what we got. But with Wind Waker, when we converted that to HD we were really surprised at how great it looked.”

Wind Waker was also seen as an experience that was ahead of its time and bringing it to the Wii U would allow the team to develop its full potential.

Aonuma adds, “It feels like we’re really able to create the complete Wind Waker experience on Wii U. In addition to the graphics, we’ve also got the GamePad and there’s lots of other pluses that we’re finding in converting to the Wii U system.”

The producer says that he also had to overcome some internal resistance from other Nintendo executives who believed the Wind Waker incarnation of Link was disliked by the player community.

Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess were initially launched on the Wii and given that the team has already had them running on the newer console, they might be officially launched at some point in the future.

Wind Waker HD is set to launch in October of this year with a host of improvements to gameplay.

Nintendo is also working on an entirely original Zelda project for the home console, which might be delivered next year.
