Valve has announced that it will be unlocking the Dead Air downloadable campaign for its Left 4 Dead 2 zombie shooter earlier than anticipated because of the massive response it has received from its community after asking its members to try out the new Cold Stream campaign, made a member of the actual fan base, in collaboration with Valve.

As part of the Steam Summer Sale Camp activity, Valve asked gamers to start up Left 4 Dead 2 and test out a community campaign called Cold Stream, challenging them to complete 20,000 playthroughs before the week was over.

The community replied in a massive way and in just four and a half hours, the challenge was done, reaching over 60,000 playthroughs in a total of just 24 hours.

In order to properly thank players for their hard work, Valve has now confirmed that it's going to deploy the Dead Air campaign for Left 4 Dead 2 earlier than expected.

"Since you hit your mark, this means we are going to unlock Dead Air early. We are going to try and release it as early as possible but will release it on July 22nd the latest. It isn’t currently ready for release as we have been working on The Terminal and Finale maps and need to test them more internally."

Dead Air was initially part of the campaigns in Left 4 Dead 1, and was promised to appear for Left 4 Dead 2 with enhanced features and support for the newer systems in more recent title, like melee weapons.

Other changes are also coming to Left 4 Dead, as Valve is testing out plenty of new things that will be deployed in the future for the first-person zombie shooter.

"We have been working on and testing a new version of the Dark Carnival finale and some gameplay changes for finales in general. We want to get some more of these changes out and tested on the PC. Once those are solid and our new campaigns are ready, we will go into the certification process on the Xbox 360 and then release. What date is that? Hard to say but with your help it just got closer."

Until Dead Air arrives for Left 4 Dead 2, players can still try out the Cold Stream campaign and report any bugs they find to the developers in order to polish it up for an official release at a later time.
