Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham were voted as best artists, creating UK's ideal super group, according to the votes of about 3,500 music fans who were polled for Planet Rock Radio.

"This is an amazing result. Listeners could have voted for any classic rock artists when creating their fantasy supergroup", stated presenter Trevor Dann, of Planet Rock Radio, who compiled the poll, as quoted by BBC.

Music fans were asked to vote their favorite singers or musicians and create their favorite band.

Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) was voted as the best guitarist, followed by Slash ( Guns N'Roses) and Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple).

Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) was named top singer, while the late Queen star, Freddy Mercury came second, followed by Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company). U2 singer Bono, came 10th.

The late John Entwistle of The Who was voted the second top bassist, after John Paul Jones, while the Canadian star Neil Peart from Rush, and the late Keith Moon of The Who, were beaten by best drummer John Bohnam, who died in 1980.

"Stairway to Heaven", Zeppelin's classic 1971 hit has been recently named Britain's favorite rock song of all times.

The band was originally formed in 1968 by guitarist Jimmy Page under the name The New Yardbirds. The original Led Zeppelin lineup included Jimmy Page, vocalist Robert Plant, drummer John Bonham, and former Yardbirds bassist Chris Dreja, but Dreja soon left music for photography (and would later take the photograph which appeared on the back of the group's debut album).
He was replaced by Page's long time friend John Paul Jones. Plant himself brought in his old friend Bonham from the defunct Band of Joy; Plant was recommended to Page by Page's first choice singer Terry Reid (who declined the opportunity). Reports vary as to where the band first all met - a pub in Walsall, Staffordshire or a rehearsal room in London being cited by some.
After some concerts as with this lineup billed variously as the New Yardbirds or sometimes simply The Yardbirds, the band's name was changed to Led Zeppelin, after The Who drummer Keith Moon quipped that the band would go over "like a lead Zeppelin". This comment is frequently attributed to Who bassist John Entwistle instead, or to a joke shared between the two. When adopting the name, the word "lead" was misspelled deliberately to avoid confusion, fearing Americans might pronounce it "lead Zeppelin" (as in "lead singer"), as opposed to a zeppelin constructed of the metal lead. The first eponymous album of Led Zeppelin was released on January 12, 1969. (source:wikipedia)
