On March 08, 2010, The New York Times Knowledge Network announced the release of a new software application designed for iPhone users who want to get a better grasp of their English. Learning English with The New York Times addresses intermediate to advanced English learners. The product engages users in improving their reading and listening techniques, and acquiring a more generous English vocabulary.

Felice Nudelman, the executive director of The New York Times Company, stresses the usefulness of this new application, saying, “The New York Times newspaper has always been an integral part of helping individuals learn English. The iPhone app is an ideal educational tool for English learners and an innovative way to reach this new audience.”

The application comes in a package of 12 lesson plans inspired from historical or famous articles posted throughout time in America’s most famous newspaper, The New York Times. The features included in each lesson sum up vocabulary flashcards, article-reading tasks, key words and audio for articles, comprehension exercises, three vocabulary review tasks and a wide bank vocabulary called the World Bank Dictionary, with translations in six important languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Spanish). The application launches in English.

Learning English with The New York Times has been released at a price of $5.99. Version 1.1 of the application weighs in at 64.2 MB. The application is already available for download and will run on iPhone and iPod touch models starting with the 2.2.1 version of the operating system. A complete set of features typical to the Learning English with The New York Times application can be found here, on its official iTunes App Store page.

The New York Times Knowledge Network is an array of learning programs started in 2007. It is well adjusted to suit actual subjects and involves the participation of The NewYork Times reporters, columnists and editors. Their goal is to provide a rich package of resources for students online.
