What with the ‘80s power dressing making a comeback in the fashion industry, it’s high time we also incorporated this empowering style into our office attire, stylists are saying. Since, at the end of the day, it is the clothes that make the man, or woman in our case, Susie Faux, founder of London store Wardrobe and image consultant for women, is offering us a few essential tips on how to dress good to feel good at the workplace.

The first step towards being noticed and respected at the office is precisely about powerdressing. This typically ‘80s style offers women the rare opportunity to make the best of both worlds, meaning look feminine and sophisticated, while also being taken seriously for their achievements at the workplace. It also screams confidence – and nothing brings about positive results than a positive outlook.

“It is all about confidence. I have women coming to me who have just been made redundant but are still investing in quality clothes so that they look good for interviews. On one hand, they know they shouldn’t be spending too much, but they know it will be worth it in the long run. Investing in ‘you’ is never a waste of money.” Faux says for the Daily Mail. Choosing clothes that are not cheap, but that last in time, is one of the smartest ways to dress nice at the office, as also is combining them with chic accessories.

“The suit is still, without doubt, the smartest choice for professional women. The two things that really matter when buying one are the cut and the cloth. A cheap suit will always look cheap. A single-breasted jacket with a neat shoulder line, gently fitted at the waist, with a slim-fitting skirt that ends below the knee is a classic that will flatter most women. Wear with a silk blouse or silk scarf underneath to soften the look.” Faux further explains.

Dressing smart at the office will never mean showing off, the same image consultant underlines. Therefore, flashy accessories and strong colors are off limits, unless we want to look ridiculous. Simplicity, with just a few more delicate touches here and there, is recommended for a clean appearance, yet, at the same time, sophisticated and elegant.

“Now it is all about looking softer and feminine. Hair pulled back with a few soft strands around the face will work for most situations from day to evening. As for your face, I recommend soft natural make-up that looks groomed but not too heavy. Avoid glossy lips, orangey fake tans and bright eye color. No make-up at all is almost as bad. A healthy complexion enhanced with a dusting of blusher, mascara and a natural lip color will work in most situations.” Faux adds about the kind of makeup ideal for the workplace.
