As revealed by Apple earlier this year, AirPrint-enabled applications can talk to a wireless printer that supports AirPrint, without the need to install a driver or configure the printer queue. Users simply tap print on their iOS device, select their printer, and print. However, in order for things to be this simple, a supported printer is required.

According to Apple, AirPrint requires one of the following devices running iOS 4.2 or later: iPad; iPhone (3GS or later); iPod touch (3rd generation or later).

Even though Apple does not specifically note that iPhone 4 is supported, the newest Apple handset is probably the most capable of handling AirPrint.

“You also need a wireless printer that supports AirPrint. That printer must be connected to the same network subnet as your iOS device,” Apple claims, in a support document on its web site.

A list of wireless printers that support AirPrint is then provided. For now, these models and these models only can handle AirPrint “out of the box,” as they say.

Apple also has a trio of notes for those looking to employ AirPrint.

Customers must verify that their printer has the latest firmware version installed, and see their printer documentation or contact the printer vendor for support.

“Please read your printer documentation or contact your printer vendor for details on how to wirelessly connect your printer that supports AirPrint to your network,” goes the second piece of advice from Cupertino.

Finally, the Mac maker also points out that AirPrint only works with a wireless connection to a printer that supports AirPrint.

Printers connected to the USB port of a computer are not supported, Apple clarifies.
