A new OS upgrade is reportedly available for download for the owners of a Motorola DROID smartphone, namely Android 2.2.1, in the form of a leaked ROM which made it into the wild not too long ago.

Following the release of the new Android 2.2.1 software update for the Nexus One, and rumored on its possible arrival on DROID X in the near future, it appears that Motorola DROID is set to receive the software solution too.

However, until something official is announced on the matter, users interested in the new software update can get it from the Internet and install it on their mobile phones before Motorola makes it available.

According to a recent post on My Droid World, the ROM can be installed on Motorola DROID quite easily, and they even provide a guide to how to do so.

The best part of the deal seems to be the fact that they already rooted the software, which should simplify things even more for those who will install the solution.

The FRG83 software update can be found on various download sites, the said post notes. As soon as the file was downloaded, one would have to place it on the root of the microSD memory card to start the installation process.

As soon as this is done, DROID users would have to - Go into Recovery   Clockwork Directions: go to install zip, find the zip on the memory card, and install   SPrecovery Directions: go to install zip, select allow update.zips (deprecated), install update.zip - Reboot the handset

Of course, given the fact that this software solution is not an official update, all the usual precautions need to be taken. Users should also note that the installation of this update would void the warranty of their handsets.

Moreover, they should make sure that they backed-up all data on the handset before starting the update, so as to make sure that no important files are lost during the installation process.
