Microsoft's Windows 7 Starter OS has held the field of netbooks so far, but it seems that it is only a matter of time before the first Pine Trail mobile PC loaded with Chrome OS comes out, more so now that the specs of Acer's model have been leaked to the web.
Just a short while ago, Intel
announced that its Atom N550 dual-core CPU would power a new generation of netbooks, and Lenovo was quick to
confirm it with its IdeaPad S10-3.
This product will run Windows 7 Starter, which makes it inherently different from a certain something that Acer has in mind.
Acer has been known to be working on an entry-level laptop loaded with Google's Chrome OS for some time, and the specification have finally started to leak.
This machine may not actually have the strongest hardware build, and definitely doesn't feature Intel's dual-core CPU, but the reported specs do indicate a fairly competent configuration.
According to
macles, the machine set to come out sometime during the next few months has, at its heart, an Intel Atom N455 central processing unit. This CPU is backed up by 1GB of RAM.
Thus far, the specs don't seem overly different from what Windows-running models have to show.
The major difference, however, is in the storage capacity. To be more specific, Acer's device allegedly comes equipped with a SanDisk pSSD-S2 solid state drive, whose capacity is of 8GB.
The pSSD-S2 is part of a larger line with capacities of up to a full 64GB, features SATA, mSATA and µSATA connectors and read/write speeds of up to 70 MB/s.
Other specifications include LAN, Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel webcam and an ambient light sensor.
Based on macles' findings, it is assumed that mass production of this device may start as early as the end of September.
As such, it is quite possible that Acer itself will make an official announcement sooner rather than later.
